Lifesong “Warms Up” Main South Community

Worcester, MA – On Saturday, January 28, 2012 Lifesong Church joined with YMCA and PIP Shelter employees to distribute winter weather clothing to dozens of homeless and economically challenged persons of the Main South community in Worcester, MA.  From 9:00am – 12:00pm volunteers served hot beverages and bakery items as well as supplied bibles and encouragement to those in need.  The event took place in front of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts located at 766 Main Street.

This marks the third year of Lifesong’s participation in this event and each year has proven more successful than the last. Tables were stocked with countless items ranging from children’s mittens to men’s shoes to women’s woven hats.  Throughout the winter months of December and January, donations had been intentionally collected by Lifesong Church, The Greendale YMCA and several other faith based organizations.  Enough donations were received this year so that there were no shortages and plenty of selection for people to choose from. Creedon & Co., a local catering company in Worcester, provided all of the hot beverages and supplies for this event. Their contribution made it possible for volunteers to stay focused on the planning and other important details; not having to worry about supplying or making these beverages was a huge help to those leading and attending this year's outreach.

The YMCA’s participation was also a key factor in the extended success of the day.  By encouraging individuals to join their organization at a 50% discounted rate in exchange for bringing an article of clothing for donation, the YMCA was able to contribute more than they ever have.  This year also brought with it a partnership with PIP shelter, which ensured that PIP residents were made aware and encouraged to take advantage of the donations that were available to them.

In addition to the handing out of winter coats and clothing, two acoustic guitar volunteers strummed acoustic melodies throughout the day, creating a welcoming and open environment. Families, single persons, and the young and aged alike came to take part in the opportunity to receive free winter weather wear for themselves and their loved ones.  The day brought the Good News and the love of Christ to the people of Main South along with a healthy dose of encouragement and support.

As the event wound down, volunteers enjoyed fellowship over piping hot bowls of soup.  Any remaining articles were donated to both Abby’s House (female and child articles) and the Salvation Army (men’s articles).

Thanks to your diligent and deliberate tithes and offerings to Lifesong, we as a church were able to give back in an abundant way to our community.  Your faithful partnership in financially supporting our church enabled us to serve and care for those in need.  Thank you for your donations of time, clothing and financial gifts as well as prayers. We are so pleased with how this year’s event turned out and anticipate that we can make next year’s event even better!
